A few years ago, I was sick of all the baby photos my friends were sending me, judging people who chose to focus on their kids over their careers, and obnoxiously anticipating future pregnancy announcements.

Deep-down, I was probably jealous.

February 2021, I noticed that I was getting out of breath easily and that my period was late. The rest is pretty obvious: I took a pregnancy test during my lunch break, and it turned out to positive.

I spend the rest of the day preparing for a presentation and then went to see my therapist right after I finished work.

October 2021, as I was about to start my maternity leave, my father told me that his cancer prognosis was not good. He died three months later. My baby was two months old and I was not doing okay.

It took me months to heal and today, I’m feeling better.

But there’s this one phrase I just couldn’t get over

« You'll see, the first twelve months are hard but then, it gets better »

Someone told me these words just days after I gave birth and they deeply shaped my expectations for my first year of parenting.

Because yes. As a matter of fact, it’s hard. It’s hard for a whole lot of reasons. It’s tough, but not all the time and not to everyone. And that sparked something in me. This made me want to know more about how new parents really felt about those first twelve months.

There’s something strong in sharing stories. That’s the reasons why I started the podcast, to create a space for people to talk about their experiences as new parents, and help listeners who might be struggling with their parenting journey, to feel a little less alone.

This podcast is also a tribute to my papa, who loved his job and always worked with passion.

Welcome to ZERO TO ONE, the podcast that collects stories of the year zero postpartum.

Stéphanie Ayusawa

Stéphanie was born and raised in Japan. After earning her high school diploma at the French International School in Tokyo, she studied management at KEDGE Business School in France. She lived in Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, and Geneva as an exchange student, and those experiences strongly shaped her.

She returned to Japan for an internship at the Embassy of Afghanistan and specialized in development studies at Waseda University. She later joined the Japan office of the Bouygues Group as a business developer and analyst for the group’s subsidiaries.

After the birth of her daughter, Stéphanie launched the podcast ZERO TO ONE in 2022, sharing stories from new parents about their first postpartum year.
